Employment Opportunities (Full & Part-time)

Full-time Personnel

Full-time employees are hired under the direction of the City of Willoughby Civil Service Commission. Positions are filled subsequent to examination and establishment of an eligibility list. The examination process varies depending on the position to be filled.

Firefighter/Paramedic

Full-time firefighter/paramedic applicants must successfully complete a written examination, physical abilities test, and a variety of screening procedures prior to establishment of an eligibility list and appointment. The testing process is generally conducted once every two years.

In order to be eligible to participate in the examination process, applicants must hold current Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification (State of Ohio or National Registry) and retain the certification throughout employment with the City of Willoughby.

Part-time Personnel

Part-time positions with the City of Willoughby File Department are processed through Willoughby Fire Administration. Contact Fire Administration at (440)953-4343 for further information.

Firefighter / EMS personnel

Part-time Firefighters/EMS personnel are hired throughout the year as vacancies occur. The hiring process consists of a physical abilities test and a variety of screening procedures prior to development of an eligibility list and appointment. In order to be eligible to participate in the hiring process applicants must possess, at a minimum, the following:

  • Valid State of Ohio Drivers License
  • High School Diploma, or have successfully completed the General Education Development Test (GED)
  • Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) Certification (State of Ohio or National Registry)
  • State of Ohio Firefighter I Certification

NOTE: The Willoughby Fire Department will accept the Physical Abilities Certificate as offered by Cuyahoga Community College in lieu of participation in the physical abilities test administered by the Department (completion date maximum one year prior to appointment).

Applications for part-time personnel are accepted year-round. Applications can be acquired from either of the City's two fire stations Monday - Saturday during normal business hours.
