ODOT update for Lost Nation Road / Rt. 2

The current closure is necessitated by the existing four-foot pavement differential between the eastern half and the western half of the Lost Nation Road bridge. In order to increase the height of the bridge to protect against Chagrin River flooding, the new State Route 2 mainline pavement, Lost Nation Road ramp bridge and the Lost Nation Road bridge over State Route 2 are being elevated by approximately four feet.

ODOT has completed the east half of the Lost Nation Road bridge and that half is at the new, four-foot higher elevation. Both north and southbound traffic are utilizing the raised portion of the bridge and driving on the eastern half of the bridge. ODOT is now working to complete the western half of the Lost Nation Road bridge in order to raise that portion as well. The Lost Nation Road bridge is expected to be completed in late November. When work is completed on Lost Nation Road, traffic will be permitted to use Lost Nation Road in its entirety and the ramp will be reopened using temporary pavement to access State Route 2 westbound.

ODOT has reviewed possible safety concerns associated with short merge lengths and sight-distance issues and has found that these ramps may remain open during the coming traffic pattern as all State Route 2 traffic is switched to the existing westbound lanes. With associated erection of temporary pavement, this allows the ramp to remain open during the seven month period between approximately late November of this year and late July/early August of 2011.

During next summer’s work however, State Route 2 east and westbound traffic between Vine Street and State Route 306 will utilize the existing eastbound pavement only. In this phase, while all traffic is traveling on the eastbound lanes, connecting the Lost Nation Road north and southbound ramps to State Route 2 westbound is not a possibility. Both the Lost Nation Road north and southbound ramps to State Route 2 westbound will be closed again in late July/early August 2011 and will remain closed until the project is complete in November 2011.

We are hopeful that the seven-month reopening will be well worth the additional cost and will serve as a welcomed break to you and your fellow neighbors!

Safe and pleasant travels,

Jocelynn Clemings, Public Information Officer
