Neighborhood Speeding Complaints

Any observations of a serious nature should be reported by way of 911 immediately. General speeding or traffic signal violations on a particular street or area may be reported by way of this website. Please note any particular times or vehicle descriptions.

Officers use marked vehicles, hand-held lasers, motorcycles, and a speed trailer to monitor traffic for violations and officers are routinely assigned to targeted areas when identified.

WPD Patch Requests

We cannot provide our department patches to collectors or others that request same. It is impossible to accommodate these requests, especially lately as they have been coming in more frequently.

Please make no such requests to any division of our department. The channels these requests have been coming through are meant for providing public information and assistance.

Federal and State Record Checks

Municipal police departments are specifically prohibited from providing state and federal record checks. The Ohio Revised Code provides for private companies to offer this service. Additional information, including a list of vendors can be found on the Ohio Attorney General’s website.

The mission of the Willoughby Police Department shall be to provide a safe environment in which residents and non-residents can live and work. The Willoughby Police Department recognizes that it derives its authority from and is accountable to the community it serves. The Department will continually strive to provide effective and efficient police service consistent with the community’s needs and concerns. This mission shall be accomplished by the prompt but fair enforcement of the local and state laws. We believe the basic concerns of the citizens of Willoughby include a desire for peace, tranquility, and freedom from crime and disorder. We further believe that only through a coordinated police-community effort can public order and safety be achieved and sustained; therefore, we will actively encourage community support in a cooperative effort to achieve this mission.

High Visibility Enforcement

In May of this year, the Willoughby Police Department was notified that it may qualify for grant monies from the Ohio Department of Public Safety/Governor's Highway Safety Office. I am pleased to announce the receipt of this grant.

The Department will receive reimbursement for up to 474 hours of overtime to provide high visibility traffic enforcement in areas that have been determined to have the highest volume of injury/fatal accidents. These areas include but are not limited to State Route 91, State Route 84, and Euclid Avenue. Specific dates and times will vary and are based upon statistics from the last three years indicating the areas that had an elevated number of serious injury accidents. A combination of radar, laser, and OVI detection will be used in an effort to reduce the number of accidents in this corridor.

Motorists should also be aware that the speed limit has been reduced to 35 MPH on State Route 91. State Route 91 is one of the most travelled roadways in the county and the Willoughby Police Department is increasing its enforcement for the safety of the motorists and our area residents.

It is the hope of the Willoughby Police Department that the increased presence of patrol officers in the targeted areas during the peak traffic hours will reduce the incidences of traffic infractions thereby reducing the number of accidents.
